The basic structure of a Japanese house floor plans begins with a strong but lightweight wood known as hinoki. Traditional carpentry methods dictate that there be no structural nails, but rather everything is wood joined in the form of a raised platform and pillar supported roof.
Floors in a traditional Japanese house floor plan are covered with thick mats called tatmi and the roof is covered with multiple layers of hinoki wood bark. Wood and papers screens form most of the interior and exterior walls. Most of the walls are removable which provides a flexible floor plan and multiple garden views.
Many homes following traditional Japanese house floor plans also included a wooden bridge connecting the main house to smaller buildings, one of which might be a tea house. The tea house was a small structure with a small preparation room adjoining it. This was the place for serving ceremonial teas.
A common interior of the Japanese house floor plan featured the built-in tsuke-shoin desk, staggered shelves and an openwork transom. The Japanese house floor plan doesn't include much furniture and bedding is stored in closets when not in use. Uncluttered rooms are a must so that any room could be used for sleeping, dining, visiting with guests or other uses. Homeowners sat directly on the floor or on cushions. The lack of furniture leads to the perception of a much larger room.
Practical function merged with the ambiance of grand spaciousness gives the Japanese house floor plan its elegance and grace. Though strict traditional methods may not be what you are looking for in a house floor plan, many elements might be employed to give your home the look and feel of the Orient.
